Grand Prize: Clara Shuler, 12th grade Leigh High School for "Malfunction."
The concept of this short story is clever and convincingly developed. The judges admired the writer’s ability to enter into the thinking processes of the characters and her skill at evoking genuine emotion in the reader. The piece has humor, pathos, and a moral dilemma—a very rich offering.
