Grand Prize: Clara Shuler, 12th grade Leigh High School for "Malfunction."

The concept of this short story is clever and convincingly developed. The judges admired the writer’s ability to enter into the thinking processes of the characters and her skill at evoking genuine emotion in the reader. The piece has humor, pathos, and a moral dilemma—a very rich offering.

First Prize Fiction:  Jillian Colrain, 10th grade Notre Dame High School, Belmont for "Issue 7703."

Honorable Mention Fiction: Morgan Satterlee, 12th grade Sequoia High School for "Decisions, Decisions."

Honorable Mention Fiction: Yi-Chi Wu, 11th grade Palo Alto High School for "Tell Them I Felt It."

 

First Prize Non-fiction: Nikar Agrawal, 11th grade Crystal Springs Uplands, for "Felicity on Friday"

Honorable Mention, Non-Fiction: Monika Kumar, 12th grade Eastside Preparatory Academy for "Second Mother"

Honorable Mention, Non-Fiction: Andre Gomes, 12th grade Eastside Preparatory Academy for "Magic of the Rice Cooker"


First Prize Poetry: Maya Sun, 9th grade Carlmont High School for "Lonely"

Honorable Mention Poetry: Carmen Vescia, 10th grade Sequoia High School for "Breathe"

Honorable Mention Poetry: Carolyn Akers, 10th grade Woodside Priory for "Mangled Menagerie"

Honorable Mention Poetry: David Williamson, 12th grade Carlmont High School for "The Rebel's Poem"

 

This year students from 25 different high schools in San Mateo and Santa Clara County participated!

$500 cash and a scholarship for a session at Peninsula Young Writers summer workshops


THREE SECOND PLACE PRIZES, sponsored by David Amann of EdwardJones: $75 cash and a $25 gift certificate
